Championing Ethical, Inclusive Innovation in Digital Health Across Emerging Economies

Rabat, Morocco – Nov , 2024

Brahmam Innovations, a global leader in social innovations, proudly partnered as a scientific co-organizer of the Digital Health Hackathon during the 2nd edition of the International eHealth Forum (IeHF) in Morocco. Hosted in Rabat under the patronage of the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, the event spotlighted a transformative approach to healthcare innovation across the Global South.

In collaboration with the Association for the Development of the Center for Innovation in e-Health (ADCIeS), Brahmam Innovations launched the first edition of the IeHF Health Hackathon, marking a new era in Morocco's digital health journey. The hackathon was designed to empower students, researchers, and entrepreneurs to co-create ethical, inclusive, and impactful digital health solutions aligned with both local needs and global best practices.

“This is more than just a hackathon—it's an innovation engine,” said Sampathkumar Veeraraghavan, President of Brahmam Innovations. “By partnering with ADCIeS, we are combining local insight with global standards and ethical design to co-create solutions that can transform lives and systems.”

Veeraraghavan, a globally recognized technologist and humanitarian, led Brahmam's delegation and played a pivotal role in shaping the hackathon's scientific framework. His mentorship drew from his extensive experience with global organziations and other international development efforts, emphasizing human-centered design, interoperability, and the development of ethical digital public goods in health.

A Surge in Innovation from Moroccan Universities

The hackathon's recruitment phase drew overwhelming interest, with 27 interdisciplinary teams selected from 171 applicants. The event became a beacon of youth-led innovation, with major participation from: EMSI University, Mohammed VI University of Health and Sciences, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University (Fez)

This enthusiastic turnout illustrates the growing strength of Morocco's academic institutions in driving real-world impact through technology and collaboration.

“The response from universities has been outstanding,” said an event organizer. “Their commitment to innovation and eagerness to deliver real solutions reaffirm Morocco's readiness to lead in digital health transformation.”

Addressing Real-World Challenges

Participants tackled pressing healthcare challenges such as:

  • Telemedicine expansion
  • Health data interoperability
  • Maternal and child health
  • Access to care in rural and underserved areas

The hackathon offered structured mentorship from healthcare experts, technologists, and international advisors, ensuring that solutions were not only innovative but also viable, ethical, and aligned with national healthcare priorities.

Brahmam Innovations ensured a strong foundation of interoperability, equity, and standards-based design, reinforcing its global mission to build inclusive digital public infrastructure (DPI), especially in emerging economies.

Toward a Sustainable Innovation Ecosystem

The IeHF Hackathon's impact extends far beyond the event itself. With a strong focus on startup incubation and grassroots empowerment, the initiative aims to transform high-potential projects into scalable healthcare ventures that address systemic gaps.

ADCIeS sees this collaboration as a model for building a sustainable innovation ecosystem in Morocco—one that leverages youth potential, digital tools, and ethical leadership to improve public health outcomes.

“Digital health must be more than just innovation—it must be inclusive, ethical, and anchored in real community needs,” Veeraraghavan emphasized.
