Brahmam Innovations Engages with Uganda's Disabled Community to Drive Inclusive Disaster Response Solutions

Kireka, Uganda Kampala, Uganda – Jan 2024

In a critical effort to enhance disaster preparedness and recovery for marginalized groups, Brahmam Innovations has deepened its engagement with the disabled community in Kireka, Uganda, aiming to identify and address the specific challenges faced by persons with disabilities (PWDs) in disaster-impacted areas.

Recognizing that individuals with disabilities are often disproportionately affected during crises due to inaccessible infrastructure, communication barriers, and limited representation in emergency planning, this initiative sought to ensure that their voices and needs are integrated into disaster risk reduction and recovery strategies.

The engagement program, led in collaboration with local caregivers and disability advocates, was both participatory and rights-based. Over 150 individuals with diverse disabilities—physical, visual, hearing, and cognitive—contributed through focus group discussions, one-on-one interviews, community mapping, and accessibility audits.

Key Findings:

  • Lack of accessible shelters and evacuation routes
  • Shortages of essential medication and assistive devices
  • Communication barriers in emergency alerts
  • Mental health needs and limited access to psychosocial support
  • Exclusion from livelihood recovery programs and resettlement planning
  • Need for disability-inclusive disaster education and policies

“Inclusive disaster planning isn't just about equity—it's a necessity for effective response. Our work in Uganda reinforces that innovation must begin with listening to those most impacted,” said Sampathkumar Veeraraghavan, Founder and President of Brahmam Innovations.

This initiative is part of Brahmam Innovations' broader mission to develop inclusive social innovations that empower vulnerable populations, particularly in low-resource and disaster-prone regions. By actively engaging people with disabilities, Brahmam is helping build a foundation for resilient, equitable, and accessible humanitarian responses.
